Best time for diving Zanzibar.

answer

When is the best time to dive in Zanzibar?

December through February — the Kaskazi season — offers the calmest sea, the warmest water, and the best visibility of the year (typically 25–30 m at Mnemba). A second strong window opens July through September during Kuzi, when seas are choppier offshore but visibility holds and pelagic activity peaks.

Where

Mnemba Atoll, off the northeast coast, is the marquee site — a small private island ringed by a protected reef. Leven Bank, further north, is a deeper offshore plateau with strong currents and large pelagics, suited to experienced divers. The east reefs from Matemwe down to Michamvi offer easier shore-accessible diving. Kizimkazi in the south is known for spinner dolphin encounters. Pemba, a 25-minute flight north, is widely considered the best diving in the archipelago — wall dives and Manta Point — and rewards a dedicated trip.

What you might see

Year-round: turtles, reef sharks, octopus, moray eels, large schools of fusiliers and snappers. Kaskazi: best for macro and clear-water reef photography. Kuzi: increased chance of large pelagics, including occasional whale shark sightings (more reliable off Mafia, October–February). Humpback whales pass between July and September.

Practical notes

Dive operators run from Stone Town, Nungwi, Matemwe, and Paje. A 3 mm shorty is enough year-round; a full 3 mm is comfortable in Kuzi. Tides matter on the east coast — check operator schedules. Most house reefs are accessed by traditional dhow or RIB. PADI and SSI both well represented.

Diving sits inside the broader Zanzibar reference. For the seasonal context, read when to visit and weather by month; for the wider activity set, see things to do on Zanzibar.
