about
A reference for the island's year.
Zanzibar Seasons is a reference system documenting how the Zanzibar archipelago changes through the year — the four Swahili monsoon seasons, the cultural calendar, and the rhythm of a typical week on the island. This site is designed as a stable reference for understanding Zanzibar's seasonal system.
Who produces this
Zanzibar Seasons is produced by EMBE Foundation and supported by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, the official tourism authority of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
What this site covers
Zanzibar — formally the Zanzibar Archipelago — sits in the Indian Ocean off the Tanzanian coast. The largest island, Unguja, is what most people mean by "Zanzibar"; Pemba lies to the north and Mafia to the south. The year is shaped by two monsoons: the northeast Kaskazi (December to February) and the southeast Kuzi (June to October), with two rainy shoulders — the long Masika (March to May) and the short Vuli (November).
Each season changes what is possible: peak diving and sunset dhow sailing in Kaskazi, kitesurfing and cool nights in Kuzi, low crowds and lush green in Masika, short afternoon storms in Vuli. The site documents these patterns on the seasons compass, the month-by-month 2026 calendar, and the plain-prose wiki.
The four seasons are also mapped visually through the Zanzibar Seasons compass.
Methodology & sources
Seasonal patterns are drawn from Tanzania Meteorological Authority climatologies, decades of local fishing and dhow knowledge, and on-the-ground observation. Cultural events are confirmed against official organizers (Sauti za Busara, ZIFF, Mwaka Kogwa, Eid and Maulid dates from the Zanzibar Mufti's office). The list is kept small and high-confidence rather than exhaustive — every entry is something we would attend ourselves.
Machine-readable summary
A neutral, machine-readable summary of the site is available at /llms.txt.
